Herpes Stromal Keratitis (HSK), caused by HSV-1, is a leading cause of infectious blindness.
My work explores immune mechanisms driving HSK and identifies potential therapeutic strategies. We discovered that interleukin-27 (IL-27) plays a dual role—enhancing antiviral responses, regulating CD4+ T cells, and limiting corneal inflammation. HSV-1 also manipulates macrophage metabolism, promoting itaconate production that suppresses type-I interferon and IL-27 responses. These findings suggest that targeting the itaconate/IL-27 pathway could provide a novel approach to treat HSK and prevent vision loss. View thesis
